The three major pitfalls that can cause you financial and legal consequences when renting an unpermitted dwelling are:
Number one, the tenant could turn around and sue you for all the rent that was paid.
In addition, the city could require you to evict the tenant, which may also require you to pay up to $25,000 in relocation assistance.
Thirdly, the city could require you to restore the property to its original condition, which can be very financially burdensome.
If you have any questions regarding your unpermitted dwelling or if you’re renting a unit that’s unpermitted, please feel free to give our office a call. We’ll be more than happy to help.
