California’s New Law on Positive Rent Reporting

California’s New Law on Positive Rent Reporting

Jun 5, 2025

A new California law is changing how landlords interact with credit reporting agencies—and it’s something every property owner needs to know. As of April 1, 2025, Assembly Bill 2747 (AB 2747) requires landlords to offer tenants the option of positive rent reporting, allowing renters to build their credit by having on-time rent payments reported to consumer credit bureaus.

Edrin Shamtob, a licensed California attorney with over a decade of experience in real estate law, helps you understand how this law may affect your rental operations. AB 2747 applies to both new and existing leases, and while it helps tenants build credit, it also restricts landlords from reporting late or missed payments, with a few exceptions.

Have you heard of the new California law that requires landlords to offer positive credit reporting to credit agencies on behalf of their renters?

Hi, my name is Edrin Shamtob, and I’m a licensed California attorney with more than a decade of experience in the real estate law field. My goal is to help property owners and landlords understand new laws that impact their rental properties.

California Law AB 2747

Under AB 2747, landlords are now required to offer a rent reporting option to their tenants. This applies for both existing tenancies and new lease agreements entered into after April 1st, 2025.

Positive Rent Payments

If a tenant opts into this option, landlords must report all positive rent payments made by their renters to at least one consumer reporting agency per year.

Delinquent Rent Payments

On the other hand, landlords are strictly prohibited from reporting any delinquent rent payments to any credit reporting agencies, even if a tenant misses a payment. There are a number of exemptions to these new credit reporting requirements.
