Santa Monica Ordinance 2776: Relocation Assistance For Tenants

The ordinance has implemented five relocation assistance protections for tenants. This means landlords are now required to provide relocation assistance to tenants under certain circumstances. These circumstances include rent increases that exceed the allowable limits under the Tenant Protection Act, if the unit is rendered uninhabitable, if landlord misconduct forced the tenant out, or if the unit is not permitted for residential use. Additionally, if the tenant was temporarily relocated for more than six months and they relinquish possession of the property, they are also entitled to relocation assistance.

Relocation Assistance Protections For Tenants

The new ordinance under the city of Santa Monica implements five relocation assistance protections for tenants. What are those five?

  1. The tenant has a right for relocation assistance due to rent increases that exceeded the allowable limits under the Tenant Protection Act.
  2. If the unit is rendered uninhabitable.
  3. If the landlord misconduct was determined by the code enforcement that forced the tenant out.
  4. If the unit is not permitted for residential use.
  5. If the tenant was temporarily relocated for more than six months and they relinquish possession of the property.
